The Bunya Mountains Tavern was first established in 1969, although it has traded under different business names in the years since. The area where the Bunya Mountains Tavern is located was previously a lucerne patch, farmed by Joe Walker, now known as the Dandabah Day Use area. Initially the business sold fresh vegetables, drinks and confectionery, and has grown over 55 years to cater for the demand from local and international tourism. 
The Bunya Mountains Tavern is now owned by a family of nearby Boyneside - descendants of Dan and Bridget Carroll, who were the earliest pioneers of the town of Kingaroy. Employing over 20 staff, the business strives to provide a unique hospitality experience to visitors from Australia and around the world.

How do I get to the Bunya Mountains?

The Bunya Mountains are accessible by car from Brisbane, Toowoomba, and the Sunshine Coast. It takes approximately, 3 hours from Brisbane, 3.5 from the Sunshine Coast and 1.5 hours from Toowoomba, 50 minutes from Dalby and 50 minutes from Kingaroy.

What time of the year is the Bunya Nut season?

Typically bunya cones fall between the months of December and March.

The enormous Bunya Pines drop massive cones that can weigh as much as 10kg.  These can contain anywhere from 30 - 100 nuts. But beware, the cones can drop from as high as 50 metres above without any warning, so if you visit during the drop you best be on your toes!

The nuts found within the cone are extremely nutritious and are a very versatile nut that can be used in a number of dishes.  
Here at the Bunyas Tavern the people's favourite is our warm bunya nut scones, served with lashings of jam & cream.

We also sell a variety of local foods in our General Store that contain bunya nuts, as well as the nuts themselves.

Unfortunately, as much as we understand that your pet is a much loved member of your family, our property is nestled within the Bunya Mountains National Park. The exception to this rule is Guide, hearing & assistance animals.  If you have an assistance or therapy animal and you wish to bring them with you they are more than welcome.  However, they must wear an identifying coat or harness & an approved badge or tag.  
If your assistance animal is not a certified support dog under the Guide, Hearing & Assistance Dogs Act (GHADA) this does not necessarily exclude them.  In this instance we (and QPWS rangers) would need to see some form of statutory declaration from an approved organisation or a letter from a medical professional (on official letterhead with a contact number) stating that you need the assistance animal.
